ARLINGTON, VA, 1 MARCH 2017—The National Genealogical Society (NGS) opens registration today for family historians to participate in on-site orientations in genealogical research at the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Library. Experienced, BCG certified genealogists will introduce and mentor intimate groups of no more than 25 individuals as they discover the wealth of data at each facility. Participants will also have ample time to conduct their own personal research during this six-day trip in Washington, DC, 29 October to 4 November 2017.

At the National Archives, you will be able to track ancestors through immigration records, US passports from 1795 to 1925, the US Census, veterans’ records, Homestead applications, and so much more. Perhaps most exciting is the ability to hold in your hands original records such as a Civil War pension file. The DAR Library houses a wealth of genealogical and historical manuscripts and publications, including special collections on African American, Native American, and women’s history, genealogy, and culture. The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world with more than 164 million books, photographs, recordings, maps, manuscripts, etc. and 838 miles of bookshelves. Without guidance from an experienced researcher, it can be both intimidating and overwhelming to compose an effective research plan for your visit.

Discover Two of our Nation’s Important Repositories in Madison, Wisconsin -- NEW NGS Research Trip!

ARLINGTON, VA, 15 FEBRUARY 2017—The National Genealogical Society (NGS) opens registration today for family historians to participate in on-site orientations in genealogical research at the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) Library and Archives and the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies, 24-28 July 2017.

The WHS Library and Archives’ genealogy and history collections are among our nation’s most extensive repositories and reflect the diversity of the people who have lived or passed through its territory. Native American tribes, French-Canadians, Northern Europeans—primarily from Germany and Norway—African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics have called Wisconsin home. The state has also seen the rise and diminution of miners, loggers, and railroad workers, and once held Confederate prisoners of war during the Civil War. Dedicated to preserving history, the Society’s more than four million records extend beyond Wisconsin to the rest of the United States and to Canada. Its Draper collection’s 491 volumes (ca. 1775-1815) concentrates on the area known as "Trans-Allegheny West," including the western Carolinas and Virginia, some portions of Georgia and Alabama, the entire Ohio River valley, and parts of the Mississippi River valley. Its collection of newspapers, journals, magazines, and union and guilds publications from around the country is only surpassed by the Library of Congress. The WHS also serves as Wisconsin State Archives that includes state, county, and local government records. Land deeds, naturalization records, tax rolls, and court documents are just some of the original records that genealogists can access at the Archives.

Family historians with ancestors from Germany will be especially interested in the Max Kade Institute’s robust collection of German-American newspapers, letters, diaries, and church and business records. The Institute is also an excellent resource for locating historic German-language, European towns and villages.

Space is limited for this new NGS research trip. Experienced, BCG certified genealogists will introduce and mentor a group of 20 individuals as they explore the wealth of data at both facilities Participants will also have ample time to conduct their own personal research during this four-day trip in Madison, Wisconsin, 24-28 July 2017.

SLC NGS Research Trip Still Has Openings -- And not for long!

Let's Enjoy a Pizza Party (Wednesday Night)

Have you ever visited the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah?

If not, consider joining the NGS Research trip there, 12-19 February 2017.

Once is Not Enough!

and Paulette Gentry have done this before. Here they
enjoy the Saturday Night diiner at the Lion House.

There is no place like this particular library. Researchers have access to numerous commercial computer databases, more than two million rolls of microfilm, an immense collection of genealogical books, and outstanding worldwide maps.

Many years ago when I was moving from NJ to TX, I first drove to SLC and spent a week at the Family History Library. I remember being pregnant (and sneaking crackers) and spending days on end in a microfilm cubicle researching my English and Finnish ancestry. It was an experience that I won’t forget. I also know that I would have greatly benefited from having some personal guidance since with my limited knowledge of what was there, I didn’t make quite the most of that trip.

And, it’s not just doing research all the time! The trip includes a pizza party (the Wednesday night) and a closing dinner (the Saturday and typically held in a period room at The Lion House).

Some people have also done this trip more than once! Check out the image of some “repeat” attendees! They must find it valuable or they wouldn’t return year-after-year!

Under the guidance of Marie Varrelman Melchiori, retired CG & CGL, and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, CG, FNGS, FVGS, participants will use the genealogical resources at the renowned Family History Library to conduct their personal genealogical research.
