20 Free and (Relatively) New Genealogy and Family History Resources - 2016 Version Part 1

I have my annual present for you ... Just over a year ago, I did a multi-part years “20 Free and (Relatively) New Genealogy and Family History Resources” (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7)

As I trawl genealogy newsletters, blogs, and elsewhere, I kept an email folder of all the news items that aren’t “big enough” for a full post and yet sound useful for genealogists and family historians. These range from how-to type information to databases. There is so much information out there and it’s impossible to fully blog about most of it.

In order that those collected don’t go to waste, I am again planning to create a few posts where I present you with 20 “relatively” new resources and the associated hyperlink. That’s it; a very no frills list. If the title doesn’t convey enough info I will add a note about what content caught my eye ...

I will be doing this from oldest to youngest in my queue – so, some of these may seem familiar to you and probably less familiar as I get to the more recently collected pieces.

The Italian Americans Premieres TONIGHT on PBS

I finally caught up on reading my Sunday newspapers and learned that The Italian Americans is premiering on tonight (9pm Eastern).

The Italian Americans reveals how Italian immigrants challenged the notion of the American “melting pot” — chronicling four generations of Italian-American lives, from the massive late 19th Century wave of immigration to today. From the importance of the family over an individual’s personal aspirations, to their distinctive, circular migration patterns, to the specter of the Mafia that still plagues Italian Americans today, this series peels away myths and stereotypes to reveal a world uniquely Italian and uniquely American.

I personally do not have Italian heritage and I know many who do!

Do you have ancestors buried in Hopkins County TX? Or, you want to figure out the cemeteries nearest to where your ancestors lived? If yes, check out this map or the associated list of cemeteries.

More genealogical news from TX -- Congregation Beth Israel in Houston (TX) has digitized and placed online early records, ledgers, and books covering from 1861 to the early 1920s. The documents are in German, Hebrew and English.

One more bit of news from TX. The Texas Seaport Museum has compiled a listing of immigrants to Galveston, Texas – Galveston Immigration Database.

My gran and her 2^nd husband both died in 2000 and 2001 respectively in the

. If I didn’t know about their wills nor had a copy, I could now search and find out. Gov.UK now has a Find a will service which covers wills or probate for any person in the UK who died in or after 1996. Both a simple and an advanced search are provided. You do have to provide a surname & year of death. For any found entry, you can purchase 31 days of access (for £10).

I’ve come across all kinds of yearbooks as I do research and this is a first – Yacht Club Yearbooks. I guess since I’ve never stepped foot in one, it’s not something I would have known about. If your family belonged to the Avalon (NJ) Yacht Club, there is now an online archive of Avalon Club Yacht Club Yearbooks covering 1953-2007 online.

The Irish Anzacs Database has been launched. The projects aim is to identify all Irish-born enlistments in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during the First World War. Read more here. Here’s a video on how to access the database. Search the database.

The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa is placing a special emphasis on Canada’s HomeChildren, since 70% of these children were settled in Ontario. There are several resources currently available – Barnardo’s Ups and Downs Magazine, Fegan Homes index

I’ve always liked The Week for “short” new items. When I stopped subscribing to the print version, I took up reading the online version. A recent-to-me find (from June) was These maps show the most common religions, Christian and non-Christian, in your state. To me what was most interesting was not the largest reporting group for each state and the second largest one.
