Status -- Keeping the GA Archives Open!

As mentioned on 13 September 2012 in Upfront with NGS, the GA Archives is scheduled to close to the public on 1 November 2012 (except by appointment).

The community has been very busy in the month since that announcement!

1. The genealogists in Georgia are doing a great job of getting the word out. They have a petition going which now has over 17,000 signatures and they are trying to get 20,000, http://www.change.org/petitions/the-governor-of-ga-leave-our-state-archives-open-to-the-public.  If you haven’t already signed it – please do!  You don’t have to live in GA or even be researching in GA to sign it!  Signing this petition allows you to show how much you appreciate how important archives are to everyone.
2. A slide show has been created to explain more about the situation and its impact, http://www.fogah.org/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/gaemergencydeckweb.pdf.  Do check it out.
3. Your National Genealogical Society (NGS) has mailed a letter to the Governor with copies to the Secretary of State, Attorney General, and key legislators.

We all benefit from the existence of archives and we all lose when archives close!

Have you done something to help keep the GA archives open?  Let us know!
