The Shirley Langdon Wilcox Award for Exemplary Volunteerism

Deadline for Submissions—31 January Annually

To recognize a volunteer whose generosity of spirit and time has greatly benefited the National Genealogical Society and the genealogical community in general over a period of years.

Criteria

The recipient must be a member of NGS.

I spend a lot of time stumbling around various genealogy Facebook pages, newsletters, blogs and more. Every so often I come across some useful information in an unexpected place.

The most recent “find” in this category is this very detailed blog post found on Against the Grain (ATG), ATG Newschannel Original: Memory in the Internet Age. Personal digital archiving is more than a fad or a trend, but an extension of the efforts that information professionals have worked to develop for centuries. As digital archiving becomes personal, information professionals are drawn into yet another complicated web of possibilities and problems.

For 25 years, Against the Grain (ISSN: 1043-2094) has been the key to the latest news about libraries, publishers, book jobbers, and subscription agents. It presents a unique collection of reports on the issues, literature, and people that impact the world of books and journals.

Given that so much of where we find invaluable information is via libraries whether material published physically or digitally, insight into the links between publishers and librarians is important to family historians. This is especially true when many of the University Presses are reported on via ATG and are often a source of scholarly historical and/or family history relevant to genealogists.

Who will win this year's Filby Award?

Do you know a librarian with at least five years' experience whose primary focus is genealogy and local history and who is employed in a public, academic, or special library? If so, you might know the next recipient of the award!

The $1,000 NGS Filby Award for Genealogical Librarianship is awarded annually. View a list of previous recipients.

History

The Filby Award is named for the late P. William Filby, former director of the Maryland Historical Society and author of many core genealogical reference tools that genealogists have relied on for decades. The award was created and first presented at the annual 1999 NGS Family History Conference by the publisher Scholarly Resources of Wilmington, Delaware. In 2004 and 2005, it was sponsored by the Godfrey Memorial Library. Since 2006, it has been sponsored by ProQuest.

Criteria

Judges use the following criteria:

· Significant contributions to patron access to information or to the preservation of historical records.

· Development of an imaginative reference tool or similar outstanding contribution of enduring consequence that fills the gaps in existing information, accuracy, scope, or usefulness of genealogical and local history materials.

· Publication of a book or a body of articles that has contributed significantly to the field of genealogy or local history and that are of an interpretive nature.

· Other activities that have significantly advanced genealogy and local history.

· Work that has encouraged others to be innovative in the field.

Nomination for the Filby Award

Nominations must include personal and professional contact information with illustrative examples of the nominee's performance as a librarian who serves genealogists. Please send bibliographic citations rather than publications.
