AncestryProGenealogists Announces Scholarship Program for Professional Genealogists

Ancestry has established the AncestryProGenealogists Scholarship Program to foster and support professional genealogists in their ongoing development efforts. The scholarships, being awarded for the first time this year, will be awarded to four aspiring or practicing professional genealogists and cover certain expenses of attending one of four U.S.-based genealogical institutes.

Award

The AncestryProGenealogists Scholarship Program will provide four scholarships that will cover tuition, round-trip standard economy airfare (Ancestry may substitute appropriate ground transportation for awardees who live within 300 miles of the applicable institute), and hotel expenses for one individual each to attend one of the four institutes listed below. The scholarships will be awarded to qualified applicants who demonstrate a commitment to genealogy as a profession, a desire for professional development, and the ability to communicate that commitment in writing.

Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed)	Washington, D.C.	July 10-14, 2017
Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP)	Pittsburgh, PA	June 25-30, 2017 or July 16-21, 2017
Institute on Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR)	Athens, GA	July 23-28, 2017
Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG)	Salt Lake City, UT	January 21-26, 2018

Abbreviated Rules

Applicants are asked to submit the following via mail or email:

1. Name

2. Mailing Address

3. Email Address

4. Phone Number

5. Resume: Your current resume, irrespective of any genealogical experience.

6. Institute Preference: Rank the four U.S.-based genealogical institutes based on your preference for attendance, from highest (1) to lowest (4): Gen-Fed, GRIP, IGHR, or SLIG. For GRIP, IGHR, and SLIG, specify which course you would like to take. Gen-Fed offers only one course.

7. Essay

· Describe your experience to date, aspirations as a genealogical professional, and how attending your top-choice institute/course will benefit your career.

· Essay must be no less than 500 and no more than 700 words.

Applications may be submitted on or after November 21, 2016. Electronic entries must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, December 31, 2016. Mailed entries must be postmarked by December 31, 2016, and received by January 5, 2017. A panel of AncestryProGenealogist professionals will review and select by January 31, 2017, four winning essays from the pool of eligible entries. Each entry will be judged based on the clear relationship between the submission and the following criteria: (1) sense of commitment to genealogy as a profession (40%); (2) sense of desire for professional development (40%); and (3) ability to communicate that commitment and desire in writing (20%). The Grand Prize winner will receive tuition to his or her first choice institute, plus travel and hotel costs. The Second, Third, and Fourth Prize winners will receive tuition, plus travel and hotel costs, to their first choice institute, unless already chosen by a higher place awardee, in which case the next applicable and available choice will apply. The approximate retail value of each prize is $1,200 - $2,000. The judges’ decisions with respect to the selection of the awardees and the interpretation of the Official Rules will be final. The names of the four selected recipients will be announced on www.progenealogists.com/scholarship by March 1, 2017. The Official

SCGS Student Genealogy Grant Applications Invited [deadline = 20 March 2016]

The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Student Genealogy Grant Committee and the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree are pleased to announce the 2016 Student Grant and Jamboree Scholarship. Student genealogists between the ages of 18 and 23 are eligible to apply for the $500 cash award and full registration scholarship for the 2016 SCGS Jamboree to be held in Burbank, California June 3-5, 2016.

The Student Grant was established in 2010 by family and friends in memory of Suzanne Winsor Freeman, family historian and life-long volunteer, and an enthusiastic annual attendee at the SCGS Jamboree. The 2016 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society will provide a full conference registration to the SCGS Jamboree in June where the award will be presented. This is a unique opportunity for a young genealogist to attend a premiere regional conference and meet genealogists from throughout the nation.

Past recipients include Elyse Doerflinger (Lomita, California), A.C. Ivory (Salt Lake City, Utah), Anthony Ray (Palmdale, California), Michael Savoca (Toms River, New Jersey), and Paul Woodbury (Provo, Utah).

“The Student Genealogy Grant pays tribute to Suzanne Freeman’s dedication to youth volunteerism and family history by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the SCGSAnnual Genealogy Jamboree, Southern California’s premiere regional genealogy conference,” notes Denise Levenick, committee chair and Freeman’s daughter.

“We are especially grateful to Jamboree for providing a three-day conference registration to the grant recipient,” she adds. “SCGS is truly a leader in conference organizations by encouraging youth involvement in genealogy through the student conference scholarship.”

Born in Olathe, Kansas, Suzanne Winsor (Brown) Freeman moved to Orange County, California with her family in the early 1930s where she attended school and lived most of her life. She developed a strong interest in family history sparked by the stories of her mother’s early life in Colorado and Kansas. After retirement Suzanne moved to Green Valley, Arizona where she was active in the local genealogy society. She enjoyed returning to Southern California each year in June to attend the SCGS Jamboree. Suzanne passed away after a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona August 28, 2010.

The $500 cash award pays tribute to these interests by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the Jamboree. In addition, a student scholarship for conference registration to the Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be provided by the Jamboree conference.

Any genealogist who is between the ages of 18 and 23 as of June 2, 2016 and a current student (full-time or part-time) is eligible to apply. The award will be presented at the Jamboree Scholarship Breakfast Sunday, June 5, 2016; the recipient must be present to receive the award. See the Grant Application for eligibility details.

Funding for the cash award is provided by the family grant program; Jamboree registration is provided by the conference. Individual contributions to the grant program are welcome at the Student Grant Webpage.

Scholarship + Genealogical Education = Wonderful Opportunity

The 2016 American Society of Genealogists (ASG) Scholar Award is open to those interested in applying.

Established in 1996, the ASG Scholar Award is an annual scholarship now providing an increased stipend of $1,000 toward tuition and expenses at one of three major academic genealogical programs in the United States. Candidacy for the award is open to all genealogists, genealogical librarians, and researchers working in related fields. Applicants submit a published work or a manuscript of work in progress, to be judged by a panel of three Fellows. The goal of the award is to recognize talent and build genealogical expertise by providing promising genealogists the opportunity to receive advanced academic training in genealogy.

The ASG Scholar Award provides financial assistance for a developing scholar to attend one of five academic programs in American genealogy: the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University (Birmingham, Ala.), the National Institute on Genealogical Research (NIGR) in Washington, D.C., the Certificate Program in Genealogical Research at Boston University, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), or the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP). The recipient may register for the program of his or her choice.

APG Accepting Applications for the 2015 APG Young Professional Scholarship

The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG®) is now accepting applications for the APG Young Professional Scholarship. Requirements have been revised to reflect current economic and educational trends and to be more inclusive of young parents, military personnel, home school candidates, students, and those currently employed between the ages of 18-29. The scholarship goes to a student and/or young professional who aspires to a professional career in genealogy. The scholarship includes a registration for the APG Professional Management Conference (PMC) and a stipend of up to $1,000 to defray costs of travel and lodging at the conference. The winner will be announced in January 2015 for attendance at the APG PMC 2016, date and place to be announced at a later date.

“It is exciting to see so many young people involved in genealogy, and we are thrilled to be able to support an up-and-coming professional genealogist with this scholarship,” said Kimberly T. Powell, APG President. “Our APG Professional Management Conference offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the business of genealogy and explore advanced genealogical topics, while networking with other professionals. We look forward to receiving many applications.”

APG Youth Scholarship Eligibility and Application Details

Eligible applicants are between the ages of 18 and 29 as of 1 January of 2015. This is open to a student, young professional, young parents, military personnel, home school, and currently employed individuals. You may apply for yourself, or on behalf of a worthy candidate.

Applications should contain the following: name; address; main contact phone number; email address; school name and/or school address (if applicable); list of extracurricular activities (including student organizations and volunteer activities); a general letter of recommendation; a letter of recommendation from an individual who has witnessed the applicant’s interest in genealogy; and short answers (500 to 750 words) to two questions. The questions are:

1) Discuss a specific record collection, media, digital source or other resource that has significantly changed your perspective about family history or research strategy along with the pros and cons of that record source, and how you used it to resolve a genealogical problem.

2) What do you envision a genealogical career will encompass in the next five years and how do you see yourself involved then?
