BCG Offers Six Free Lectures (Live or by Webinar) on 6 October 2017

Top genealogists Jeanne Bloom, Martha Garrett, LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, Jill Morelli, Ann Staley, and Tom Jones will present six one-hour lectures held at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City Friday, 6 October 2017 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mountain U.S. time. The lectures are free and open to the public (registration is not required), sponsored by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. All will be broadcast online (free registration is required, see below). The Board is an independent certifying body and author of the updated 2014 Genealogy Standards.

The $500 Donald Mosher Award for Colonial Virginia is offered annually by the BCG Education Fund for current research in any of three categories:

- Three-generation Family genealogies beginning with a 17th- or 18th-century Virginia family.
- Studies of immigrant origins focusing on a 17th- or 18th-century Virginia immigrant whose pre-Virginia origins have not been previously documented.
- Projects that make accessible obscure or difficult, previously unpublished 17th- or 18th-century Virginia source material.

Award applications are accepted for projects published in 2017 or intended for future publication. Applications must be submitted by 31 December to MosherAward@bcgcertification.org.

Can’t Attend NGS 2017 Next Week! No Worries. NGS To Stream 10 Genealogy Lectures LIVE

Sometimes we just cannot attend a conference, no matter how much we want to. Well, you can still have some of that conference experience via LIVE real time video! 10 NGS conference lectures will be streamed LIVE and you can catch these from home.

The package purchase options are laid out below. Most importantly, registration for live streaming will close at midnight, 10 May 2017, if you want to watch the sessions real time and LIVE.

Not able to catch the Livestream! You can access video streamed on-demand versions by purchasing the Livestream special-value conference pricing through midnight, 14 May 2017.

After 14 May, the ten video sessions are available to order with the Video Pass package on the Conference Recordings page. All registrants of packages will receive an electronic version of the NGS 2017 Family History Conference Syllabus.

They will have three months following the conference to view and repeat the video live streaming sessions (through 13 August 2017), and six months following the conference to stream or download audio files.

REMINDER: If you are attending the conference in person and have not yet registered, in person registration opens at noon on Tuesday, 9 May at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Austin, Texas, 5 July 2016—With access to many state and local government records threatened by decreasing budgets, the Records Preservation and Access Committee (RPAC) announced today its support of the Joint Statement by the Council of State Archivists, the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators, and the Society of American Archivists, which affirms that the “preservation of and public access to government records is of paramount importance” and “government archives play a critical role in ensuring citizens’ rights and preserving the nation’s history.”

RPAC and its many participating organizations represent several thousand local, state, and regional genealogical societies, including more than 400,000 members researching family history, and more than 2,000 professional and forensic genealogists. They are among the “more than 80 million professional and amateur genealogists around the world,” according to a 2013 report in the Voice of America on a market research study conducted by Global Industry Analysts.

Professional and forensic genealogists as well as family historians routinely seek access to archival collections in state, county and municipal archives, museums and/or libraries. Forensic and professional genealogists utilize these records for research, which includes tracking relatives with possible inheritable diseases; working with coroners to identify unclaimed persons; finding next of kin of unclaimed persons for repatriation of military remains; heir research; proving Native American tribal membership; adoption cases; land disputes; and oil and gas leases. Family historians study the records to trace and learn about their ancestors. Genealogical societies also hosts member trips to state and municipal archives. Yet, decreasing budgets are limiting—and, in some instances, precluding—access to these records.

In accordance with RPAC’s 2014 declaration, “Genealogists’ Declaration of Rights,” which has been signed by more than 10,700 genealogists in support of access to public records, the Committee applauds the archivists’ Joint Statement and commitment to their shared goals.

BCG Will Make Two Changes to the Certification Process in 2016

At the May meeting, the trustees of the Board for Certification of Genealogists authorized two significant changes in the certification process for new applicants. These changes will go into effect in 2016, when the new Application Guide is published. Briefly, for the first time (1) new applicants will be evaluated on their genealogically educational activities, and (2) new applications will be limited to 150 pages.

Genealogy standards 82 and 83 state that genealogists regularly engage in formal and informal development activities for four reasons: to better meet the standards, to learn more about useful materials, to enhance skills in reconstructing relationships and events, and to better present their findings to others. Years of data also show that applicants with more genealogy education are more likely to produce successful portfolios for certification.

Accordingly, as is currently the case, applicants will be required to briefly describe the genealogy-related activities that help prepare them for certification. However, as is not currently the case, this section will now be evaluated. Genealogical-education activities will meet the evaluation criteria if they show that the applicant “has engaged in a variety of development activities aimed at improving genealogical standards attainment.”

This change adds one rubric to the evaluations of portfolios. The new rubric emphasizes the need for ongoing genealogy education. Failure to meet one specific rubric does not disqualify an application. Other questions currently asked in the resume will be eliminated.

The second change will reduce the size limit for new portfolios to a maximum of 150 pages total. The current limits were established when BCG had more requirements for certification than now. The new size limit provides ample room for applicants to demonstrate their abilities.

“These changes are part of BCG’s ongoing analyzing, evaluating, and refining the certification process,” said BCG president Jeanne Larzalere Bloom. “We hope that these two changes will streamline the process, make it more manageable for applicants, and encourage applicants to engage in a variety of genealogical-development activities before assembling a portfolio.”
