Genealogy Summer Camps for Youth Which Keep on Giving

Genealogy Summer Camps for Youth Which Keep on Giving

This past summer, Penn State offered 3 summer camps revolving around genealogy with 2 of them having a focus on genetics.

Genetics & Genealogy Detectives (June 19-30): This is a two-week residential/day research camp where campers will dig into case files to discover genetic traits and genealogical relationships. No personal information will be used!

Finding Your Roots: Unscripted (July 10-14): This one-week residential/day non-research camp is offered in collaboration with PBS affiliates WPSU/WETA to produce a PBS documentary and video clips to support students and teachers who will use the curriculum in the future.

Finding Your Roots (July 17-28): This is a two-week residential/day research camp where campers will use their own DNA and family histories to learn about genetics and genealogy.

I learned about these camps when a video, Finding Your Roots: The Seedlings – Episode 1, became available. I know I would have enjoyed such a camp when I was a youth!

It will be interesting to watch out for subsequent videos and hopefully catch the planned PBS documentary.

Learn about the genesis of these camps via the about tab.

What universities or other entities near you are providing in-depth genetic genealogy camp, workshop, or other learning opportunities for youth?

Current Season of Finding Your Roots Premiered Last Week & Continues Tonight

Unfortunately, I took a bit of a “medical” hiatus last week and didn’t get to post about Finding Your Roots premiering the current season last Tuesday.

Fortunately, you can catch that episode right here (The Stories We Tell -- Donna Brazile, Ty Burrell and Kara Walker).

Catch tonight’s episode on your local PBS station, 8/7c PM. Bill Maher, Soledad O’Brien and Bill O’Reilly participate in The Irish Factor episode.

If my math is correct, there will be 8 more weeks after this!

Archives of Popular Genealogy Programs -- Too busy before? Now you can catch up!

With the holiday season, after we’ve celebrated with family and before we return to work, we sometimes find ourselves with a bit of spare time.

If you find yourself in that situation, and you just want to take it easy on the couch or in your comfy chair, this might be the time to catch up on Finding Your Roots. Full episode videos are available.

You can also catch some full episodes of another popular show, Who Do You Think You Are? via Youtube.

Or, if you’ve been crazy busy and didn’t have time for Genealogy Roadshow, the Season 1 episodes are available (Season 2 will premiere next month).

And, talking about videos ... don’t forget that the NGS has a YouTube channel with FREE-to-the-public videos and members can access these and other members-only videos via the NGS website. These may have been mentioned last and they are not the “least!”

Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Season 2 premieres Tuesday, September 23 on PBS

Season 2 of Find Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr, premieres on Tuesday night and features three well-known figures who knew almost nothing about their fathers' histories – Stephen King, Gloria Reuben and Courtney B. Vance.

Here's a clip from Stephen King's reveal.

The website also has several features you might want to check out:

· Your Stories -- Every family has a unique genealogical journey, just waiting to be unlocked. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. asks you to share your own by submitting our online form

· Episodes – full episodes of previous shows

· Video – also has links to full episodes as well as clips and previews for the coming season

· Behind the Scenes – all kinds of helpful resources

· Classroom – a collection of Lesson Plans on various topics using video clips from Finding Your Roots

Get your comfy TV viewing spot ready, check out the website for your local listings (for me it automatically brought up the UNC-TV (and its various channels) with show times and station details), sit back and relax, enjoy and learn ....
