So Many Genealogy-Related YouTube Channels, So Little Time!

Are you taking advantage of all the videos posted on YouTube related to genealogy and family history research?

For the most part, I often just stumble across videos of interest embedded in a blog post or similar that I am reading.  Once watching the video, I will see what other videos were created by the same source – basically, I check out the “channel” in which the video was found.  Think of these channels kind of like tv channels except instead of NBC, ABC, CBS, etc., you have NARA, LOC, LVA, Ancestry, etc.

Since these platforms can be overwhelming, this is where finding “channels” of interest is key!

Do know that on YouTube when you visit a new channel, a video will start up immediately, so you will possibly want to pause that video and/or have your sound off as you explore.

Let’s look at a few of the genealogy-related ones that I am aware of or searched out as I wrote this post:

Smithsonian (there are also separate channels for the various component museums)
Nick Thorne, The Nosey Genealogist (British Family History)

As you can see there is a quite a bit of diversity in who/what has a channel – from national institutions like NARA to state-level ones like the Library of Virginia to individuals.

Something I like about videos is that I can listen to them in the background as I am doing other work (or fun).  Then, if something catches my ear, I can pull up the viewer, rewind, and then actually “watch” a segment of interest.

If you know of family history-related YouTube channels that are must "check out" for our community, please post a comment!

Archives of Popular Genealogy Programs -- Too busy before? Now you can catch up!

With the holiday season, after we’ve celebrated with family and before we return to work, we sometimes find ourselves with a bit of spare time.

If you find yourself in that situation, and you just want to take it easy on the couch or in your comfy chair, this might be the time to catch up on Finding Your Roots.  Full episode videos are available.

You can also catch some full episodes of another popular show, Who Do You Think You Are? via Youtube.

Or, if you’ve been crazy busy and didn’t have time for Genealogy Roadshow, the Season 1 episodes are available (Season 2 will premiere next month).

And, talking about videos ... don’t forget that the NGS has a YouTube channel with FREE-to-the-public videos and members can access these and other members-only videos via the NGS website.  These may have been mentioned last and they are not the “least!”

Do You Live in the Philly Area? Have an Interesting Genealogy Story? Genealogy Roadshow is Currently Casting for Philadelphia

We often talk about Who Do You Think You Are (see Related Articles below) and that is not the only genealogically-themed TV show for us to view.  We have previously also mentioned Genealogy Roadshow, History Detectives, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr, and others.

You can currently catch this season’s episodes of Genealogy Roadshow – Austin, San Francisco, Nashville, and Detroitonline

If you live in the Philadelphia area, you still have a chance to participate in that episode (taping in October), since the show is currently casting there.  Watch the same website for any future casting notices.

Is there a family legend you would like to explore? Is there a missing piece or person in your family tree you’ve always wondered about?

Do you believe you might be connected to our nation's rich history and folklore?

Have you discovered an ancestral link to a founding father or an American icon?

Is there a family story passed down for generations you would like investigated and finally answered?

If so, we’d love to hear from you! To apply to have your story told on national television, please complete the application form. Please note our casting staff will contact you if your information is being considered.

The neat element of Genealogy Roadshow is that the stories are all the stories of readers like you and I.  Not to say that “our” readers are not famous in their own right !

If you have previously participated in a Genealogy Roadshow program, tell us what you thought about the experience (the not just what was shown on TV elements!).
