WDYTYA? Live speaker handouts and some lectures FREE to access

Event is now past and you can still learn from it! Read below about how.

Many are familiar with WDYTYA? Did you know that it started as a UK series on the BBC? Did you know that since 2006 there has been a Who Do you Think you Are? Live program in the UK and that it’s massive?

Well, even if you did know about all that, did you know that some of the programs and handouts are available online and for FREE?

I might have gotcha with that one.

The Society of Genealogists (SOG) has a collection of handouts (also includes handouts from 2014 & 2015). Handouts from 2013 are here.

DNA Lectures given are available on this YouTube channel. The event itself also has a YouTube channel though it only seems to have a few older video clips.

If you know of any other resources available from this event, please let me know.

Again, just because you cannot attend event, doesn’t mean that you cannot still share in some of what happened and learn from experts, whether near or far.

Eight-episode docu-series Long Lost Family premieres Sunday, March 6, 2016 on TLC

More tv series news ...

Just about a year ago, there was a one-hour TV special called Long Lost family.

TLC and Shed Media, who bring you Who Do You Think You Are? are behind an eight-episode docu-series, again called Long Lost Family and with the same hosts, which features family members trying to reunited with birthparents, biological families, or children placed for adoption.

Hosted by Chris Jacobs and Lisa Joyner — both adoptees who have searched for their own biological families — each episode of Long Lost Family features the stories of two people or families hoping to find what they are looking for.

WDYTYA Returns 26 July 2015 & Finding Your Roots Postponed

Okay fans of WDYTYA, the new summer season starts 26 July 2015. Read more about the new season and the planned celebrities at TLC Reveals Celebrities for Summer 2015 Season of Who Do You Think You Are?

On the other hand, Finding Your Roots hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr is currently in limbo as a result of the Ben Affleck controversy. Read a synopsis of the controversy and the list of celebrities who have been taped in Celebrity Genealogy on TV: Who and When?

If you haven’t yet caught any of these shows, they are a mix of entertainment and education. We learn more about these individuals and something of their ancestry while we are reminded of tried and true research strategies and resources while also possibly being introduced to new-to-us strategies and resources that just might benefit our own personal research.

WDYTYA Live (UK) Speakers' Handouts Available Online for FREE

, besides there being a TV show, there is also an associated conference held called Who Do You Think You Are? Live

Since many of us have not nor will not ever attend this conference, it’s great that select presentation handouts are available online.

Archives of Popular Genealogy Programs -- Too busy before? Now you can catch up!

With the holiday season, after we’ve celebrated with family and before we return to work, we sometimes find ourselves with a bit of spare time.

If you find yourself in that situation, and you just want to take it easy on the couch or in your comfy chair, this might be the time to catch up on Finding Your Roots. Full episode videos are available.

You can also catch some full episodes of another popular show, Who Do You Think You Are? via Youtube.

Or, if you’ve been crazy busy and didn’t have time for Genealogy Roadshow, the Season 1 episodes are available (Season 2 will premiere next month).

Do You Live in the Philly Area? Have an Interesting Genealogy Story? Genealogy Roadshow is Currently Casting for Philadelphia

We often talk about Who Do You Think You Are (see Related Articles below) and that is not the only genealogically-themed TV show for us to view. We have previously also mentioned Genealogy Roadshow, History Detectives, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr, and others.

You can currently catch this season’s episodes of Genealogy Roadshow – Austin, San Francisco, Nashville, and Detroit – online.

If you live in the Philadelphia area, you still have a chance to participate in that episode (taping in October), since the show is currently casting there. Watch the same website for any future casting notices.

Is there a family legend you would like to explore? Is there a missing piece or person in your family tree you’ve always wondered about?

Do you believe you might be connected to our nation's rich history and folklore?

Have you discovered an ancestral link to a founding father or an American icon?

Is there a family story passed down for generations you would like investigated and finally answered?

The neat element of Genealogy Roadshow is that the stories are all the stories of readers like you and I. Not to say that “our” readers are not famous in their own right !

Behind the scenes at Who Do You Think You Are (WDYTYA) ...

Many readers have been watching Season 5 of Who Do You Think You Are?

If you are part of this crowd (or have never caught an episode) you might find this interview by Thomas MacEntee of Dan Bucatinsky, A Behind-The-Scenes Look at Who Do You Think You Are?, interesting.

“My interview with show co-producer Dan Bucatinsky, who also starred in the popular television series Scandal for which he won an Emmy, provided me with some interesting information about the celebrities, the research methodology and how each episode is created, from start to finish.”

I found this answer particularly interesting and relevant since it highlights that in producing the show they do run into the same issues that each of us has, that sometimes we just get stuck in our research ...

“As for having boring ancestors? “We’ve never turned people away for being boring. We have turned people away because there is no story, no narrative to follow. A document trail runs dry or we hit a wall or we can’t confirm a particular lead that we’re on. Like any mystery, you know, digging into someone’s historical ancestry is about following clues; it is what makes the show so fun to shoot because it is like a scavenger hunt. But if suddenly a clue were to run dry, your story would stop. So we do a lot of research at one time and once in a while someone’s story will either hit a dead end or it will just be ten generations of potato farmers and there’s nothing you can do about it.””

After initially writing this, I also learned that the Genealogy Insider (Diane Haddad) did an Interview With "Who Do You Think You Are?" Producer Dan Bucatinsky and you can have FREE access to a Lisa Louise Cooke Genealogy Gems Podcast where she also interviews Dan Bucatinsky – Episode 113 – An Interview with Dan Bucatinsky of WDYTYA?. These are all great ways to find out more about what is behind the producing of this popular show.

Editor’s Note: I have knowingly done research three times for this show.Two of the three times the research trail just went cold in the sense that we could learn a lot about the person and yet not details that make for watchable tv nor could we determine parents or enough details to do much with!.
