Drone Over Auschwitz ...

The title of this post on World.Mic really says it all.  Do read the article and click on the video link provided ...

It is haunting ...

It reminded me that back in 1982 I back-packed solo through Europe for 4 weeks.  It was my gift to myself using money saved from a college scholarship stipend.  As you can imagine, I visited many cities and numerous countries, all of it candy for the senses and yet three things have always remained steadfast in my memories – a rainy trip to a castle, a train announcement misunderstood leading to an all day odyssey (both stories for another day) and visiting Dachau.

I really cannot explain the feelings of that day. It was an experience that my few photos cannot and could not begin to tell – it was too visceral. And, I don’t have any ancestors who were imprisoned there or elsewhere during WWII.  This was not personal to me in terms of my family, it was personal in the sense of a citizen of the world.

This drone video of Auschwitz, even more so than the movies made depicting concentration camps and their historic legacy and the stories of heroism, sacrifice and more, re-created for me how it felt when I stepped foot inside Dachau over 30 years ago.  An eerie and hard to verbalize experience ...

Have you come across footage or images that you feel have really made a bit of history feel “real” to you in a way that nothing else has?
