Mobile Conference App Now Available for the NGS 2017 Family History Conference

ARLINGTON, VA, 24 APRIL 2017—The Mobile Conference App for the National Genealogical Society (NGS) 2017 Family History Conference is now available. This conference will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 10‒13 May 2017. To download the free NGS Conference App, go to http://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/attend/mobile-app/.

The NGS Conference App is available for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, and web-enabled devices. Search your app store for NGS Family. If you already have the 2015 or 2016 NGS mobile app, go to settings within the app and tap “Exit to Conference.” Choose NGS 2017, then tap download.

Some of the convenient features on the app allows users to

· stay organized with the Dashboard’s up-to-the-minute information;

· find all conference information in one place with “About NGS 2017 Family History Conference”;

· receive important real-time communications from NGS with Alerts;

· follow and join in on the conference chatter with the built-in Twitter feed. The Twitter hashtag is #NGS2017GEN;

· sync your schedule across multiple devices;

· locate sessions and exhibitors on the convention center maps;

· connect, message, and share schedules with your colleagues through the Friends feature;

· link to syllabus material for each lecture, which will be available beginning in early May; and

· take and save notes.

We encourage you to begin using the app now so you can improve your conference experience in Raleigh.

Editor’s Note: It’s really convenient to download and use the app when attending the NGS conference. I have been waiting for this announcement so that I can get started building a Friends list and also block out the talks and events that I am already scheduled for. I also find the maps invaluable as I move from place to place. Feel free to "Friend" me. It will be nice to catch up with Upfront with NGS readers whether long-time ones or those new to the blog.

NGS Releases Mobile Conference App for 2015 Family History Conference

ARLINGTON, VA, 6 APRIL 2015—The National Genealogical Society (NGS) announces the release of the Mobile Conference App for the NGS 2015 Family History Conference, which will be held 13‒16 May 2015 in St. Charles, Missouri. To download the free NGS Conference App, go to Mobile App.

The NGS Conference App is available for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, and web-enabled devices. Search your app store for NGS Family History Conferences.

New this year, we have introduced a multi-event NGS app. This allows attendees to download a single app and access all current and future NGS conferences by adding new events to this app.

Features include:

· The Dashboard to keep you organized with up-to-the-minute information

· About the NGS 2015 Family History Conference to keep all conference information in one place

· Alerts of important real-time communications from NGS

· Twitter feed to follow and join in on the conference chatter. The Twitter hashtag is #NGS2015GEN.

You also can

· Sync your schedule across multiple devices

· Locate exhibitors you plan to visit

· Access a list of Local Places based on Category

· Connect, message, and share schedules with your colleagues through the Friends feature

· Link to syllabus material for each lecture, which will be available about 29 April 2015.

Two New FREE FamilySearch Apps To Become Available Sometime Today!

Familysearch previewed two new mobile apps (Family Tree Viewer (in both iOS and Android), and Memories (iOS only for the first release)) on the 11^th, you can watch the video here, http://broadcast.lds.org/ICS/techtalk2014/2014-07-11.html. Do note that the first 5 minutes of the video deal with LDS matters and so if that is not of interest to you, jump to the 5 minute mark to catch the actual preview.

In the video, Jesh Barlow demonstrates the two apps, explaining target audiences, best-case user intents, and how each app serves to complement the work that can be done on FamilySearch.org . Both apps are free. They will sync with FamilySearch.org, so information can be accessible from any device.

These apps are supposed to become available in the respective stores (iTunes and Google Play) sometime today.

The newest genealogy-related Apps for your ios device (few are yet available for android!)

It seems as if every other e-mail is telling me about a new “app” available for an iphone (or related). Grumble, grumble, grumble. As the owner of an android-based phone, it frustrates me incredibly when I read all of these announcements. My first question is always, “when” will the android version become available?

It also puts me in a bind as far as this blog, since I really like to report “news” that has broad utility and ideally that would be announcing the availability of a genealogy-related app for both platforms. Unfortunately, that rarely happens.

That said, here is a summary of the recent news about new and mostly “ios apps” that might interest our genealogical community.

+ BillionGraves iOS App (available in 25 languages) [20 Apr 2014, BillionGraves does have an android version available]

+ Find-a-grave [20 Apr 2014, an android version is being worked on and there is a 3rd party app available]

+ TreeView Mobile (the Genealogist) (both ios and android)

And, in the works and coming soon is:

+ Capture (by findmypast)

I “hope” to soon hear that an android version is available for each of these apps

National Genealogical Society Announces Release of Mobile Conference App 2014 Family History Conference Richmond, Virginia 7–10 May 2014

Lists, lists and more lists -- Great apps including some Genealogy ones!

The start of a new year (and sometimes the end of the previous year) brings out a lot of “lists!”

I am not normally a “lists” person unless we are talking “to do” lists. Yes, I still hand-write up my daily to-do list so I can cross off all I’ve accomplished and then throw it out! So much satisfaction.

That said, I noticed that on some “top” apps lists for 2012, there are some directly genealogically-related ones as well as others that can be invaluable to family researchers both personally and with regards to research.

Here are a few of the ones I came across. I have highlighted some of the apps with direct genealogy applicability. And, in the interest of full disclosure, there were a lot of apps that were “new” to me!

And, remember yesterday’s post and my new year’s resolution to start a food diary – well, I am using MyFitnessPal as recommended on a few of these lists (both the web interface and android app). So, even if you are seeking apps which are specifically genealogical, I suggest you check out these lists for any “new” app which might just make life better!

The Best Genealogy Apps [really Software]

PC Magazine recently published a piece on the “Best Genealogy Apps.” Though the title is a bit misleading as the article really covered genealogy software and not “Apps” as we have come to think of in this age of iphones and android-based phones!

That said ... what is your favorite genealogy software program?

And, speaking of Apps, Tamura Jones has published a list of Free Android Genealogy Apps and Paid Android Genealogy Apps. Are there similar lists for apple products?
