One of my Favorite weeks – Preservation Week (23-29 April 2017) – and days -- May 1 (May Day)!
#preswk @PreservationWk

This is a week that I like to make sure and recognize every week.  Records preservation is so important to family historians!

Learn more about Preservation Week as an initiative of The American Library Association (ALA).  There are links to informative pieces, including Advice from Donia.

The Library of Congress celebrates preservation every week of the year via it’s dedicated Preservation webpage.

And, just a few days later, don’t forget that May 1 is May Day – Saving Our Archives which focuses on emergencies and emergency preparedness for archivists and other cultural heritage professionals.

Let us know if preservation week or May Day activities are taking place near you.

Let's Celebrate Preservation Week! #preswk

It’s Preservation Week #preswk -- Are you celebrating?

In 2005 the first comprehensive national survey of the condition and preservation needs of the nation’s collections reported that U.S. institutions hold more than 4.8 billion items. Libraries alone hold 3 billion items (63 percent of the whole). A treasure trove of uncounted additional items is held by individuals, families, and communities. These collections include books, manuscripts, photographs, prints and drawings, and objects such as maps, textiles, paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and furniture, to give just a sample. They include moving images and sound recordings that capture performing arts, oral history, and other records of our creativity and history. Digital collections are growing fast, and their formats quickly become obsolescent, if not obsolete.

The real question is whether you are preserving?  Almost 40% of collections are held by individuals, families, and communities.  That’s you!

If you are responsible for maintaining your families archive, check out Saving Your Stuff – a real quick look at a few easy things you can do to help protect your personal or family archive.

There is also a webinar archive on various preservation topics.

Is your local library, archive, or repository sponsoring events to celebrate preservation?

What are you doing to preserve invaluable family documents, heirlooms and more!

Just search the internet on preservation and you will find a plethora of resources to assist you in preserving your family heritage for future generations!

Let's celebrate Preservation Week -- We all benefit!

This week is Preservation Week. This week is always a great opportunity to think about what you, or a local organization or archive or library or government entity are doing to help make sure that future generations will be able to take advantage of all that has been preserved for them.

From the American Library Association (ALA) Preservation Week page ...

During Preservation Week libraries all over the country present events, activities, and resources that highlight what we can do, individually and together, to preserve our personal and shared history.

Preservation Week was created in 2010 because some 630 million items in collecting institutions require immediate attention and care. Eighty percent of these institutions have no paid staff assigned responsibility for collections care; 22 percent have no collections care personnel at all. Some 2.6 billion items are not protected by an emergency plan. As natural disasters of recent years have taught us, these resources are in jeopardy should a disaster strike. Personal, family, and community collections are equally at risk.

Preservation Week is an initiative of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).

Many libraries and other facilities will hold special programs this week.  Check with your local library or other repository to see if there are any special programs planned.  Or, maybe a new resource guide has been created?

As a minimum, make sure that you are “preserving” your own personal heritage for your descendants to enjoy!

P.S.  Preservation Week even has a Facebook Page!
P.P.S.  There is a great Event and Speaker Map to make it easy to find out what is happening in your neck of the woods.  This is not a comprehensive resource and do check locally for non-listed events.
