Happy 4th of July -- Fireworks, Barbecues, Beaches, and Possibly Some History ...

Living in the North Carolina Piedmont, I am surrounded by so much history.

This means that as we celebrate the 4th of July today and commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, the local options for how to celebrate include more than fireworks (though the majority of the local celebrations seem to revolve around carnivals and fireworks), they also include events like the Independence Day Celebration being held today (11-4) at the Joel Lane House, “The Birthplace of Raleigh.” Admission is FREE. This is run by some super people whom are sharing part of their 4th of July in the pursuit of sharing local history with others.

I will say though that many historical sites in the area (and across the state) are closed for the holiday.

I did look further and found that the Guilford Courthouse, National Military Park has a slate of special events running from 11-2:30 and Old Salem also has a busy day scheduled.

Given that these historical site programs all end by dinner time.  This still gives you time to grill your dinner with friends and family and then enjoy any local fireworks.  Granted, you might miss a day at the beach, and, spending some time learning about what it was like at the time of the American Revolutionary War is a great way to honor our forefathers as they set the nation on a path to independence.

If you have or plan to attend any neat historical programs in your community, let us know.
