Even though I am half English, I have yet to find a British WWI veteran in my family tree. My grandfather did serve during WWII. On my father’s side, they were all recent emigrants to the USA, as WWI commenced, and so they didn’t serve.

Findmypast Launches US Marriages Collection -- FREE until 15 February 2016

In 2016/17, Findmypast will be releasing the largest online collection of US marriage records, spanning centuries of American history and over 100 million "I do's". As part of this project, Findmypast has launched the first 33 million records of this collection and is offering them to the public for FREE from now until 15 February.

The eventually complete collection is described as ...

marriages collection spans 350 years of American history - 1650-2010 - and comprises over 100 million records, 450+ million names from 2,800 of the 3,000 counties in the United States. Within the records you can discover the Bride & Groom’s ages, occupations, place of residence and even find out about the parents and witnesses at the wedding to help expand your family tree further.

Mocavo and Findmypast are coming together

I am a customer of both Findmypast and Mocavo and from the latter I received this email last week ... I have bolded and underlined a statement regarding FREE Mocavo content remaining as such.

We wanted to let you know that in the coming months Mocavo will be coming together with its sister site, Findmypast. This will create a single experience for our US customers in a move that aims to deliver a more focused, efficient and comprehensive service to US family historians.

Mocavo's Story
We launched back in March 2011 when, only three months old, Family Tree Magazine named us as one of the best 101 genealogy websites of 2011. In 2012 we released The Free Yearbook collection and since then we’ve continued to publish hundreds of records and archives every day. We’d like to thank you, our customers, for being there with us as we’ve continued to grow.

We are now in the process of moving all Mocavo site content to Findmypast so you’ll soon be able to enjoy everything currently available on Mocavo and more. As part of our 'Free Forever' promise, Mocavo subscribers will continue to enjoy free access to all of the same records that were previously published for free on Mocavo. We will be transferring your account over to Findmypast soon so stay tuned for updates.

What's next?

You don't need to do anything just now. When we bring the two sites together, we'll be in touch with specific information about your account and some how-to guides that will help make the most of the new experience.

You'll still benefit from the same great content you’ve been enjoying on Mocavo and this will all be available on Findmypast soon. In addition, you'll be able to take advantage of hundreds of millions of new and exclusive US records to further enhance the experience for US family historians.

FREE Index ($ to access found records) -- FindMyPast Releases 1939 Register

Findmypast has just made available the so-called 1939 Register. You can search the index for FREE though it does cost (separate from any other Findmypast subscription or pay option) to access the actual data and related information.

This is an important record because the 1931 census of England and Wales was destroyed by fire in 1942, there was no 1941 census taken and the 1951 census survives though won’t be available until 2052 due to the 100-year closure rule established after the 1911 census.

This is personally interesting for me as this is the first time my mother would show up with her parents as she was born in 1937. I did search on my grandfather, when I couldn’t find my mother, and found the household. Interestingly, the household is shown with the head of household (my grandfather -- John R Fountain), 1 other (should be my grandmother) and 1 locked individual (should be my mother). This is because the listed individuals have to have surpassed the one hundred year and one day mark in order for the information to be made public. Since exact birth dates are part of the collected information, as individuals achieve this milestone, their information will become available.

In my case, since my mother is deceased, there is “supposed” to be a mechanism available where if I provide proof that she is deceased, access can then be granted. As soon as I know more about this option, I’ll add that info to this post. Once I unlock my mom, I’ll then go looking for my then still-living great grandparents and other family members.
