Explore the World’s Largest Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City, Utah

ARLINGTON, VA, 15 MARCH 2017—The National Genealogical Society (NGS) opens registration today for family historians to participate in an on-site orientation, consultations, and genealogical research at the world-renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The trip is planned for 28 January to 4 February 2018. Registration is limited to forty-five participants.

The Family History Library offers genealogists vast and rich resources of genealogical data on individuals from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The library includes 2.4 million rolls of microfilmed genealogical records, 727,000 microfiche; 356,000 books, serials, and other formats; more than 4,500 periodicals, and 3,725 electronic resources. The electronic records are accessible on numerous commercial computer databases in the library.

Experienced, BCG certified genealogists—Marie Varrelman Melchiori, Certified Genealogist Emeritus, and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, CG, FNGS, FVGS—will insure that your research trip is productive. An online orientation will help you prepare for the trip. The research leaders will introduce you to the library’s resources on your first full day in Salt Lake City. Throughout the six-day trip, they will also be on hand to assist you during your research.

Early Bird Registration for NGS Research Trip to SLC ENDS 1 September!

Have you ever visited the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah?

If not, consider joining the NGS Research trip there, 12-19 February 2017.

There is no place like this particular library. Researchers have access to numerous commercial computer databases, more than two million rolls of microfilm, an immense collection of genealogical books, and outstanding worldwide maps.

And, it’s not just research all the time! The trip includes a pizza Party (the Wednesday night) and a closing dinner (on the Saturday and typically held in a period room at The Lion House).

SLC NGS Research Trip Still Has Openings -- And not for long!

enjoy the Saturday Night diiner at the Lion House.

Many years ago when I was moving from NJ to TX, I first drove to SLC and spent a week at the Family History Library. I remember being pregnant (and sneaking crackers) and spending days on end in a microfilm cubicle researching my English and Finnish ancestry. It was an experience that I won’t forget. I also know that I would have greatly benefited from having some personal guidance since with my limited knowledge of what was there, I didn’t make quite the most of that trip.

And, it’s not just doing research all the time! The trip includes a pizza party (the Wednesday night) and a closing dinner (the Saturday and typically held in a period room at The Lion House).

Some people have also done this trip more than once! Check out the image of some “repeat” attendees! They must find it valuable or they wouldn’t return year-after-year!

The Family History Library (in Salt Lake City UT) is offering a FREE week-long United States Research Seminar (30 classes) 12^th -16^th October 2015. Half of the classes will also be offered as webinars (also FREE).

The trip includes:

¹Non-researching companion receives the benefits of the double room and any planned events.

The trip hosts, Marie Varrelman Melchiori,and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, will be available throughout the trip to help guide participants.

Marie Varrelman Melchiori specializes in records at the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Since 1988, Melchiori has lectured at NGS and the Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences. She taught at Samford University’s Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). Melchiori also conducted workshops on beginning genealogy and military records for the National Archives. In 1999 and 2000, she served as a trip director for the NGS Research Trip to Ireland. She was a recipient of the Association of Professional Genealogists’ Graham T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit.

Shirley Langdon Wilcox served as NGS president from 1996 to 2000, and was elected as a fellow in 2001. In 2011, she became the first recipient of the NGS Shirley Langdon Wilcox Award for Exemplary Volunteerism. She is a former president of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Fairfax Genealogical Society, the Prince George’s County Genealogical Society, and the Virginia Genealogical Society. A board-certified genealogist since 1973, Wilcox is a current member of the DAR and also serves on the board of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the District of Columbia.

Researchers will have access to numerous commercial computer databases, more than two million rolls of microfilm, hundreds of thousands of microfiche, an immense collection of genealogical books, and outstanding area maps. The research trip includes:

Online orientation
Seven nights at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel
Six full days of research at the Family History Library and guidance from NGS experts

Shuttle van transfers from airport to hotel and return

The trip hosts, Marie Varrelman Melchiori, cg^sm, cgl^sm,and Shirley Wilcox, cg^sm, fngs, are seasoned experts in conducting research.

Marie Varrelman Melchiori, cg, cgl, specializes in records in the National Archives, Washington, DC. Marie has lectured at National Genealogical Society and the Federation of Genealogical Societies national conferences since 1988. She has lectured on military records for Samford University’s Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). Marie has conducted workshops on military records and beginning genealogy for the National Archives. In September of 1999 and in 2000 she was one of the trip directors for the NGS Research Trip to

Shirley Wilcox, cg, fngs, served two terms as NGS president and has been board certified as a genealogist since 1973. As a native Californian, she has experience tracing her own lines from New England and the South across the country to Northern California in the 1850s–1870s. As a professional genealogist, she has compiled lineages for clients whose ancestors lived in many geographic regions. Shirley was president of the Association of Professional Genealogists (1991–1993), president of the Virginia Genealogical Society (2007–2011), served on the Board for Certification of Genealogists (2000–2009), and currently serves as a member of the Board of Assistants of the Mayflower Descendants in the District of Columbia. Since 1996 she has been the verifying genealogist of the National Society Colonial Dames of America in the District of Columbia. In 1995 she received the Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit from the Association of Professional Genealogists.
