Genealogical Research Institute of Virginia conference features Tom Jones, co-editor NGSQ

This year's GRIVA conference will be held Saturday October 15, 2011 at the Virginia Historical Society.  Our speaker will be Tom Jones, PhD,CG, CGL, FASG, FUGA, FNGS and his conference theme will be "Strategies for Finding Hidden Ancestors."  Dr. Jones will present four presentations namely:
  • Five Ways to Prove Who Your Ancestor Was
  • Five Proven Techniques for Finding European Origins
  • Missing Something? Getting the Most Out of Genealogical Evidence
  • How to Avoid Being Duped by the Internet.
The $45 registration fee ($55 non-member) includes lunch and beverage.  Parking is free at the Historical Society.  Walk ins are also welcome but lunch may not be guaranteed.  Avoid the non-member fee by joining the GRIVA society.

On Friday night, October 14, we will be observing the 30th anniversary of GRIVA at the Westwood Racquet Club.  Sign up for either or both events online at http://grivagenealogy.wordpress.com/.  Parking is also free at the Westwood Club.

GRIVA (the Genealogical Research Institute of Virginia) is a recognized non-profit entity under 501c3 of the IRS code.

National Hispanic Heritage Month


Though National Hispanic Heritage Month is drawing to a close (it runs 15 September – 15 October) there is still time to revel in one’s Hispanic heritage or just learn more about this wonderful heritage.

The National Genealogical Society online interview series and the NGSGenealogy channel on YouTube present NGS & The Board for Certification of Genealogists, with Laura DeGrazia, CG, past president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists and co-editor of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. Laura reflects on how the National Genealogical Society and the Board for Certification of Genealogists support genealogists in their efforts to produce quality genealogies. The video is available for viewing on the videos page of the National Genealogical Society website at http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/cs/videos_online and on the NGSGenealogy channel on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/NGSGenealogy.

The October video offering for members from the National Genealogical Society, is Finding My Genealogy Family with Pamela Boyer Sayre, CG, CGL. In this video Pam discusses the joy of belonging to the genealogical community. This video is for viewing by National Genealogical Society members at the NGS website. The National Archives (NARA) on Tumblr!


The latest tool in NARA’s social media toolbox is Tumblr, a microblogging platform that allows users to share photos, videos, quotes, links, text, and audio files with the Tumblr community. The National Archives currently maintains five different “tumblelogs”:
The content within tumblelogs is meant to be brief and to the point. It is a great platform for sharing visually appealing content, such as documents and photos, from our holdings. With a large community already on Tumblr, users can easily share and re-post content to followers and watch the message spread! Staff members at Tumblr have created the “Spotlight,” a dedicated page within Tumblr that features some of the most interesting tumblelogs in a variety of categories. Tumblelogs featured in the Spotlight are chosen by Tumblr staff members as a way to draw attention to the most creative and innovative content. Searching through the Spotlight is a great way for users to find new tumblelogs to follow. Currently, AOTUS, Today’s Document, and Our Presidents have been featured in the Spotlight!

15th Anniversary Celebration of Ancestry.com started 1 October!

The 15th Anniversary Celebration at Ancestry.com has begun!!  Over the next 15 days we'll have FREE access to a different collection each day along with our 15 Days of Discovery Sweepstakes.  On Saturday, they had had the Social Security Death Index open and they gave away a FREE World Explorer membership, Sunday it was the Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland and today it was the 1960-1985 CA Marriage Index.  

They'll announce FREE access to a new collection each day during the celebration leading up to the Sweepstakes Grand Prize drawing, a trip to California to go behind the scenes of Who Do You Think You Are? with Executive Producer, Lisa Kudrow.
