You Can Help Index the 1940 Census

I can’t wait for the 1940 census to be released.  This will be the first census where my grandparents will be married and my parents and aunts and uncles will be listed!  It will be so neat to see them enumerated!  And, it will also be the last census where that same grandfather is listed along with most of the extended family who were almost all deceased by 1950.

Besides that wonderful personal element of the 1940 census, as we’ve been reporting, on April 2, 2012, NARA will provide access to the images of the 1940 United States Federal Census for the first time. Unlike previous census years, images of the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be made available as FREE digital images.

Upon its release, FamilySearch and its partners will coordinate efforts to provide quick access to these digital images and immediately start indexing these records to make them searchable online for free and open access.  FamilySearch is seeking your help to quickly get these records indexed.

  2. As of 4/6 -- Ancestry.com has Delaware and Nevada indexed, http://www.ancestry.com/1940-census + FamilySearch has posted that Delaware is fully indexed with Colorado (83%), Oregon (59%), and Kansas (76%) with other states in process, https://www.familysearch.org/1940census/ -- any other status updates to report?
